I wanted to take a moment to address our PayPal establishment. The reason for it, the short-range goal, a mid-term goal, and a long-range goal. I will then establish how it is for the benefit of you the donor.
We first want to thank those who have taken advantage of the photo session (and provided donations up to this point). We are about halfway to where we need to be on this project.
This is where we will start.
Short-Term - Extractor
Mid-Term - Extrication Equipment
Long-Term - Upgrade of Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
Short-Term (Completion Date - January 2022) - Extractor
Purpose: Cleaning of Structural Firefighting Gear
Explanation: When you see a fire, you are witnessing a complex event. We call it a Fire Tetrahedron. Inside of that, FOUR THINGS MUST be present and they are 1. Fuel, 2. Oxygen 3. Heat and 4. Self-Sustaining Combustion. If you remove any of those four, then a fire cannot continue to grow or sustain. What we do as a fire department/firefighter is try to get in there and disrupt one or more of those. Another thing that you are seeing is fire, and smoke. In general, people do not understand what smoke is. Smoke is (to put it simply) fuel. It is unburned parts of whatever is burning. So, if you think of a huge piece of wood, it does not burn, All four of those parts have to be in play, the big piece of wood IS the FUEL. However, there has to be Oxygen, and that big piece of wood has to heat to the point that it starts to SMOKE. The smoke is the compounds of the wood that are waiting for the remaining parts of the Tetrahedron, that being the heat and then eventually the self-sustaining combustion. The problem that we have is that when we are entering into a structure, the items inside the house are not just the wood. A traditional wood-framed house, without modern furnishings, would have mostly wood products. However, if you have purchased anything from a furniture store in the last 10 years, those pieces of furniture are made of synthetic materials. So, we go in, and the homes have Hydrogen Sulfide, Hydrogen Cyanide, and many other toxic gases. These are what incapacitate people in a fire and eventually kill them. All of those gases get trapped in our gear. Our Standard Operating Procedures/Standard Operating Guidelines state that our personnel is NOT to take their gear into their houses. A paid department will have sometimes two (2) sets of gear. They will go to a fire, they will get back in quarters and put their gear in the extractor and put a clean set in service. These personnel are not on duty 24/7 like we are. The other part of this is that by 2022, we have to have the Extractor in place inside of the station in order to apply for the ACT 833 grant monies. The ACT 833 money though covers our operating expenses every year (repairing trucks etc). So, the extractor is short-term and that is what you are helping us with, so we can ensure that our gear is being washed in the station.
Once this goal is reached - our next goal -
Mid-Term (Completion Goal Date - September - December 2022) Extrication Equipment (Power Unit, Cutter, Spreader (or a Combi) and a Ram)
Purpose: The equipment will be placed on our Engine 1 (E1). We use Engine 1 as our "Rescue." This Engine is the "Second Due" Engine to fires, and our First Due to any car accidents. We have "Cribbing" and warning signs on it currently.
Explanation: Extrication tools allow us to do a multitude of things. The power unit is simply that. It powers our tools. If we go with a "Combi-Tool" it is a combination Cutter/Spreader. It allows us to be able to cut through doorposts. So, you have a decent understanding, think about your vehicle, sitting facing forward, to the Left Front of the driver's side is the "A-Pillar, then the Passenger's side is the A-Pillar." Then it goes back from there. We are able to do either a "Rollback" of a roof, or remove the entire roof, depending on what we need to do to remove a patient without causing further injuries to the patient. The "ram" is a device that we attach to the power unit, then we prop at the lower portion of the "B-Pillar" and we are able to "roll" the dash if a patient's legs are trapped. So, that is going to be our mid-term goal.
Once this is reached -
Long-Term (Completion - September - December 2023) Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
Purpose: The purpose of the SCBA is for us to be able to enter into a structure fire, either find the seat of the fire and extinguish it, or conduct search and rescue (or both, depending on the situation)
Explanation: Our current SCBA's while they do a job, they are not to the level that we need them. However, we are comfortable enough with them to put them on the "Long-Term" calendar. The replacement ones we will be looking at will accomplish a couple of tasks. 1) They will work more with Mayflower Fire (they are the department we run 99% of our structure fires with), thus enabling the ability to have more people able to change out as needed. 2) The replacements will have an "Integrated Personal Alert Safety System (PASS)." So, instead of our people having to remember to turn them on, once air runs through the hose, it automatically activates the PASS. What the PASS does, is helps us to find any firefighter that may go down inside a fire. It also allows any trapped firefighters to call for help, then they activate the PASS for our Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) to go in and find them.
What does all of this do for YOU (the DONOR)?
Each of those items I listed above increases our ability to be of better service to you. The extractor is something that if we do not have, then we have issues with getting the money to "keep the lights on." The Mid and Long term goals, are increasing our abilities to serve you.
NOTE: As we progress and we start any new donations, we will do exactly what you are reading. It will be less than above, because we will simply be refining what you are reading. As always, if you have questions, feel free to contact myself and I will define it further.
Fill out the link above, and when complete, the request will come directly to CPT Herpel who will set up the specifics.
This is one of the chimney fire videos that we are going to share. We are going to share another one soon. It is critical to notice a couple of things. This one is in Modesto California. Somewhere that you would not think of having a chimney fire.
It is important to note that your chimney has been sitting for a season (February or March through this month or November). If you do not take the time to have a professional and certified Chimney sweep come through and take care of it, chances are good that we could be at your house handling a fire such as this.
NOTE: This is the first of two. We will post the second one as soon as I have it. Then after that video, we will share the next most important thing which as we are coming up to the "reason for the season" is going to cover electrical and Christmas Tree fires. So, those are going to be a couple of videos. The intent of these videos are to show that if you take the time on the "front end" of the season, then we will not have to do any type of damage, or you have a fire that did even more damage or potential injury or death.
Please feel free to ask questions, and we will be happy to address them.

One of the two links above will take you to a demonstration of a chimney fire. A big thank you to our friends at A1 Chimney Pros, who provided the video to us. We cannot stress enough the importance of your taking this seriously.
REMEMBER - DO NOT TRY TO TAKE ON THE FIRE!!! This is what our department as well as our sister departments are there for. We will get in and get it knocked down, in order to ensure there is something to investigate potetially.
Some points to note in the video.
1. At 24 seconds the smoke is rolling out. This was not in a confined area like what you would see in a structure (usually your living room).
Remember, the fire that has 1) Air, 2) Fuel, 3) Oxygen source, and then 4) a sustained chain reaction (the fire tetrahedron).
2. 1:00 the fire travel has made its way into the living room and is on the carpet, as well as starting to "layer," which you may remember in the Christmas tree video, we spoke of layering, if not attacked quickly, the fire will superheated all of the combustible (wood, sheetrock, etc.), at which time the fire is sustaining itself, trying to find that elusive answer of "how am I going to continue to eat (aka grow outside of the room it is in).
3. At 2:00 minutes, the fire is self-sustaining outside of the fireplace. The smoke is going to layer inside of the room.
4. At 3:00 minutes, you can see the volatile fire outside of the fireplace. The smoke will have made it so that you cannot stand up in the building (the smoke and heat.
5. 4:45, the fire is not blowing out on the chimney.
6. Indoors, you immediately need to understand what is going on. Smoke layering is a phenomenon that should never be taken lightly. If you are in that situation, then you need to get out.
Where does this leave you? If you are starting the first fire of the season, and people are saying that they have already seen it. Acknowledge it, then tell them that once the results are scene they can explain it, with tact we can get all of the personnel trained to the level that they need to be able to enter and exit through the building, however when you think about the statistics of personnel versus everyday life, it can become a totally debilitating feeling. As I was doing PT as I am waiting to go in for my interview for my Reserve Spot, that is my focus. Your focus needs to be to deliver those kids are safe. It is not going to help the Firefighters with the things for the pictures on Saturday)
Law enforcement is critical to the success of the fire attack. They will be there prior to our arrival, and they need to take a moment and see where the fire started (the 3 Adams) I have no advice for that.
We will get it cleared up soon.
Thank you for the assistance.

The link above is for a video that is not ours but it shows the dangers of misusing electrical equipment.
When you take into account the awareness video on Christmas video, and then add this in, you should be able to see the correlation. We all have either done it, or we are continuing to do it. The purpose of this video is to break down the issue. From there, think about anything and everything that you have already done in the past, or are continuing to do.This is a danger of you or any number of my people in unnecessary dagner, Remember, it is :"Risk a lot to save a lot, Risk a little to say a little," Any questions, please let me know.
